Dream of a Broken Memory

2017 José García Gallery, Mexico City, Mexico

Dream of a Broken Memory is a new series of acrylic paintings by Eduardo Sarabia. Dream of a Broken Memory is a narrative continuation of the artist’s latest project at Museum Tamayo - Plumed Serpent and Other Parties. The title of this show is also included on one of the paintings. Other one announces a film Dreaming on a dream which artist has been developing since 2006. The five large-format works presented at the gallery have an ominous presence of a recurring dream – with the territory of Mexico in flames is repeated on all. These maps have no traces of human presence or urban sprawl. In this apocalyptical vision the only residuals of human existence are fires, distributed around the whole territory. These fires produce heavy smoke, covering the northern part of American continent. The lost territories are not visible anymore. Similarly, the future of North America seems to be shrouded in a dense fog. Within this dystopian dream another dream occurs: rose garlands and quetzals, colorful birds under the threat of extinction, appear out of nowhere, bringing hope to a hopeless situation. “It was a series of works I wanted to make of the geographical map of Mexico. I had a dream the country was on fire and so much smoke was created that it covered the United States. In these paintings there are no signs of humans... cities... I liked the idea that fires could be caused by meteors”.
